420 (cannabis culture)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4/20

Statue of Louis Pasteur, at San Rafael High School, which is said to be the site of the original 4:20 gatherings.
Observed by Cannabis counterculture, medical patients, legal reformers, entheogenic spiritualists
Type Secular
Date April 20
Observances Cannabis consumption
420, 4:20, or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) is a code-term used primarily in North America that refers to the consumption of cannabis and by extension, as way to identify oneself with cannabis subculture, and also simply cannabis itself. Observances based on the number 420 include smoking cannabis around the time 4:20 p.m. (with some sources also indicating 4:20 a.m.[1]), on any given day, as well as smoking cannabis on the date April 20 (4/20 in American form).[2]

[edit]Origins

A widely discussed story says that a group of teenagers in San Rafael, California,[3][4] calling themselves the Waldos,[5] because "their chosen hang-out spot was a wall outside the school",[6] used the term in connection to a fall 1971 plan to search for an abandoned cannabis crop that they had learned about.[5][7] The Waldos designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time.[6] The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase "4:20 Louis". Multiple failed attempts to find the crop eventually shortened their phrase to simply "4:20", which ultimately evolved into a codeword that the teens used to mean pot-smoking in general.[7] Mike Edison says that Steve Hager of High Times was responsible for taking the story about the Waldos to "mind-boggling, cult like extremes" and "suppressing" all other stories about the origination of the term.[8]
Hager wrote "Stoner Smart or Stoner Stupid?" in which he called for 4:20 p.m. to be the socially accepted hour of the day to consume cannabis.[9] He attributes the early spread of the phrase to Grateful Dead followers, who were also linked to the city of San Rafael.[9]
[edit]April 20 observances

April 20 has become a counterculture holiday in North America, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis.[2] Some events have a political nature to them, advocating for the legalization of cannabis. North American observances have been held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park near the Haight-Ashbury district,[10] the University of Colorado's Boulder campus,[4][11][12] Ottawa, Ontario, at Parliament Hill and Major's Hill Park,[13][14] Montréal, Québec at Mount Royal monument,[15][16] Edmonton, Alberta at the Alberta Legislature Building,[17] as well as Vancouver, British Columbia at the Vancouver Art Gallery.[18] The growing size of the unofficial event at UC Santa Cruz caused the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs to send an e-mail to parents in 2009, which stated in part "The growth in scale of this activity has become a concern for both the University and surrounding community."[19]
Events have also occurred in Auckland, New Zealand at the Daktory.[20][unreliable source?] and Dunedin, New Zealand, at University of Otago.[21][22][23][24][25][26]

Students and others gather for a "420 Day" event at a meadow near the University of California, Santa Cruz, campus on April 20, 2007.

"Mr. Hager said the significance of April 20 dates to a ritual begun in the early 1970s in which a group of Northern California teenagers smoked cannabis every day at 4:20 p.m. Word of the ritual spread and expanded to a yearly event in various places. Soon, cannabis aficionados were using "420" as a code for smoking and using it as a sign-off on flyers for concerts where the drug would be plentiful. In recent years, the April 20 events have become so widespread that several colleges have discouraged students from participating. At the University of Colorado, Boulder, where thousands of students regularly use the day to light up in the quad, administrators sent an e-mail message this month pleading with students not to "participate in unlawful activity that debases the reputation of your university and degree.""

Location : Emo? Scene? Goth? Not even close. I’m way more original than any of those worthless labels. I’m the kids who loves to quote his favorite songs. That one guy who actually want to find love. That one guy is pushed around too much and too much shit. But you know, I’d rather do nothing. Karma works in wondrous ways. I’m that disturbed child, when you look at him, you see a kid with long greasy hair. He looks like he never leaves his room, or has never seen the sun. Label me all you want. I know who I am. I’m a metalhead, and I’m proud of it.
